The Lisbon tourist guide
Lisbon is the capital and largest city in Portugal, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Tago river. The two banks of the Tago river are connected by the April 25th Bridge and the Vasco de Gama Bridge.
Lisbon is the city of the fado, of the palaces covered by the azulejos (the characteristic painted tiles), of the winding alleys negotiated by tram.
The tottery houses of the Alfama, the poorest and oldest neighbourhood in the city are a strong contrast to the newly-developed Expo district, built in an abandoned industrial area in occasion of the Universal Exposition of 1998.
Tourists cannot miss seeing the Castel di São Jorge (São Jorge Castle), located in the acropolis site of the old city, and the Parque Edoardo VII, the largest park in the city. And the best place to spend the evening is... Bairro alto.
The Belém neighbourhood with its Torre di Belém (Belém Tower), from whence Vasco de Gama sailed towards India is another must-see, and the Padrao do Doscombrimentos, the bow-shaped monument that highlights the great discoveries of maritime exploration.
