Flying to Alicante and getting around

Alicante airport is one of the top-50 busiest air facilities in Europe. More than 30 airlines operate out of this airport, including many who offer cheap flights to Alicante from several British cities. The airport is only 6 miles away from the city, and public transportation is available in the form of city buses. To reach the city centre, take bus number 6 from outside level +2 of terminal N. Single tickets cost €2.75 and the trip to the centre takes approximately 20 minutes. The last bus departs the airport at midnight. Taxis are readily available at the airport too. They can be found at level 0 of terminal N and usually charge €25 for the ride into town.

If you are planning on taking the city buses frequently during your stay in Alicante, it pays off to buy a contactless 10-trip travelcard (called Mobilis), which costs €8.25 and allows you to travel in all city buses and trams. These cards can be bought from newsagents.

Sights and activities in Alicante

Alicante's beaches are one of the city's main draws. Postiguet beach is centrally located and is particularly pleasant in the evenings, when you can enjoy the Mediterranean breeze while strolling along the waterfront. This beach also affords panoramic views of the city skyline. Other recommended beaches are El Campello (accessible by public transport) and La Almadraba.

Alicante's old town makes for a great day of exploration. Here you can wander around its narrow streets and beautiful “plazas” (town squares), do some souvenir shopping, and relax sitting at a streetside cafe with a glass of chilled horchata, a traditional drink that is typical of the region.

If you are in the old town, do not miss the chance to visit the Santa Barbara castle, a medieval fortress that towers 544 feet above the city. You can walk, drive, or take an elevator to the castle, and entry is free of charge.

Paella originated in this region, so you should not leave Alicante without sampling the local version. For a taste of paella with views to the sea, go the port area, which is dotted with trendy outdoor restaurants.
