Ancient Buddhist temples, ultra-modern skyscrapers, street vendors offering all kinds of fruits and drinks, and some of the largest shopping malls in Asia are some of the things that characterise Bangkok.

This fascinating and exotic city has been a magnet for travellers during several decades, and nowadays millions of tourists every year make the most of the cheap flights to Bangkok that are easily found online.

Getting to and around Bangkok Most international flights to Bangkok arrive at Subarnabhumi airport, which is 19 miles east of central Bangkok. Buses, taxis, minibuses, shuttles, and trains link the airport with the city, giving visitors plenty of choice according to their budget. The fastest way of getting to the city centre (the Sukhumvit area) is to take an Airport Rail Link train from the station located on the lower level of arrivals. Tickets to the centre range between 45 and 150 baht, depending on whether you take a regular or a non-stop train. The Airport Rail Link route has connections with the underground and the Skytrain. Alternatively, you can take a free shuttle to the airport's transportation centre and hop on a minivan or bus to other areas of the city. A flat fare of 35 baht applies. Metered taxis can be booked at the public taxi desk located at the airport's first floor.

Getting around Bangkok

Bangkok is a huge city, and as such, there are many methods of transportation available. The underground (MRT) and Skytrain (BTS) are the fastest ways of getting around. Unlimited day passes are available for 130 baht. Because the city is built on a network of canals, there are several boat services available, which shuttle passengers up and down the Chao Phraya river and other minor waterways. The more adventurous types can try going on a tuk-tuk, a moto-taxi, or the Bangkok buses. Bangkok top insider tips Avoid the touristy floating markets and visit Bang Nam Peung floating market, located in what is known as Bangkok's green lung.

For a cheap and filling meal on air-conditioned settings, head to the top floor of any shopping mall and you will find a food court offering delicious dishes at extremely low prices. Large supermarkets also have food courts. Moto-taxis have fixed fares, so if you find yourself stuck in traffic and want to reach your destination quickly and cheaply, they might be a better bet than a regular taxi.

For a great day out and a cheap tour of the Chao Phraya river, head to Koh Kret island, which is the last stop of the river boat services departing from the central pier. You will feel miles (and years) away from civilisation in this quiet and pleasant island.
