Flights to Cancun

Cancun is known for its exciting nightlife, beautiful coastline, and reasonably priced accommodation options.

And like in any other Mexican city, the local cuisine is incredibly tantalising. Having so many reasons to book your flights to Cancun, it pays off to spend some time reading through this guide, just so that you know exactly what to expect from your holiday in Cancun.

Flying into Cancun: what you need to know Visitors flying into the city arrive at Cancun International Airport. This air facility is located 9 miles away from the city centre, and just over 5 miles from the Zona Hotelera (the area where most hotels are found). The airport is Mexico's second busiest, as more than 14 million passengers use it every year. It is easy for travellers to find cheap flights to Cancun, as the airport is home to many budget and charter airlines that run cheap flights to Cancun from other cities in Mexico, the United States, Germany, the UK, Holland, Belgium, Italy, and Canada.

Once you land, remember to wait until you have cleared customs before exchanging money. The exchange booths at customs offer poor exchange rates and you only need to walk across the arrivals hall to get better value for your money. If you have not pre-booked transfers from the airport to your hotel, you have two options: You can book a shuttle service from the Information Centre located between customs and the exit gates, or you can buy a bus ticket from the airport to Cancun's bus station (located in downtown Cancun).

Bus tickets can be bought from the ADO offices located after baggage collection for 56 Mexican pesos, and they depart roughly every 30 minutes. Shared shuttles can cost anything between 160 and 530 Mexican pesos, depending on the number of passengers and the final destination. Taxi rides into town are costly and best avoided unless you cannot find other means of transportation, although they are a good option to get around downtown Cancun.

Sights and activities in and around Cancun

Those who have booked their low cost flights to Cancun and are looking to enjoy their stay without breaking the bank can head to the city beaches for a day of swimming, sunbathing, and entertainment. The best beaches are Playa Linda, Playa Langosta, Chac Mol, and Playa Delfines.

San Miguelito is a picturesque beach where you can also explore some Mayan ruins. Sailing tours, swimming with dolphins, and watersports are other common activities in the area. You can shop for food, souvenirs, and handicrafts at local markets like Mercado 28, Kihuic, and Parque Lumpul. Interesting day trips out of Cancun include Isla Mujeres, Tulum, Cozumel, and the archaeological complex at Chichen Itza.
