Few cities in the world have inspired poets, writers, and filmmakers in the powerful way that Rome has. The Italian capital has accumulated a collection of nicknames that point at the importance of this city in the history of Western culture. The eternal city, the capital of the world, the city of fountains, and the city of God are some of the titles given to this magical city. There are now many affordable flights to Romedeparting from the UK, so why not choose this city as your next holiday destination?

Flying to Rome

There are two airports in the vicinity of Rome. Ciampino International airport is located 8 miles south of the city centre and operates many low cost flights to Rome from other European capitals. Several coach companies run buses linking the airport and Rome Termini station, including Terravision and SIT Bus Shuttle, which offer one-way fares starting at €6. Once in Termini station, you will be able to transfer to the rail and bus network. The trip between the airport and Termini takes 40 minutes. It is also possible to take a local bus from the main terminal building to Anagnina underground station. The bus/underground combination will cost you €3 and might be a good option if you are travelling light.

Fiumicino airport is 20 miles away from the city. Cheap flights to Rome usually arrive at terminal 2, from where you can walk to the airport's train station and reach Termini in 30 minutes. For under €3, you can also take a bus to the underground stations at Magliana and Cornelia for onward connections to the city. Note that both airports enforce a flat-fare taxi rate, so a taxi ride should not cost more than €48 to or from Fiumicino or €30 to or from Ciampino.

Making the most of your holiday in Rome

There is so much to see and do in Rome that you will need to plan your visit if you don't want to miss out on the main landmarks. Touring through the impressive remains of ancient Rome is a must. You might have seen pictures of the Colosseum, the catacombs, or the Pantheon, but seeing these architectonic wonders in real life is a memorable experience. It is useful to know that the Rome Archaeological card can be booked online and gives you access to the top-10 attractions in ancient Rome without having to queue.

Don't forget to include a couple of museums in your itinerary (one of them should be the Galleria Borghese), and remember that wandering without a specific destination in mind is one of the greatest pleasures in any visit to Rome. Last but not least, explore the magnificent Italian gastronomy and indulge in its famous pasta and pizza recipes, and in the flavours of real Italian coffee and wine.
