The city of Malaga has been a leading tourist destination since the 1960s. This charming Andalusian city attracts thousands of visitors every month with its pleasant Mediterranean climate, laid back lifestyle, and vibrant cultural scene.

If you have already booked your low cost flights to Malaga and are looking for more information on the city, read on to find out the essentials that every visitor must be familiar with when travelling to Malaga.

Flying into Malaga Malaga's airport is one of the busiest in Spain, as it handles a large number of cheap flights to Malaga from cities in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Eastern Europe, and other Spanish destinations (including Barcelona, Tenerife, Ibiza, and Valencia). The airport is only 6 miles away from Malaga, and approximately half way between the city and Torremolinos, another popular tourist destination in the Costa del Sol.

Getting from the airport to the centre of Malaga

There are three ways of getting from the airport to the centre of Malaga. Travellers can get on a taxi outside the arrivals area in terminal 2. Taxi rides into the city take approximately 15 minutes and cost €20. If you are travelling to a destination other than Malaga city, there is a minimum taxi fare of €20, regardless of the distance. During the summer months it is recommended to pre-book a taxi online in order to avoid long queues. Alternatively, you can take a commuter train from the station located outside terminal 3. Trains cost €1.70 and take just over 10 minutes to reach Malaga's central station. Buses A and 19 also depart from outside terminal 3 and cost €3. Instead of buying your tickets on the bus, you can now use the ticket office located opposite arrivals in terminal 3, which sells public transport cards called “billete único” and allows you to use inter-urban buses at discounted rates.

What to see and do in Malaga Many tourists who book their cheap flights to Malaga head straight for the beaches. However, there is much more to Malaga than that. Take some time to walk around the Alcazaba, a 1000-year old Moorish fortress that offers impressive views over the city (tip: entry is free if you visit after 2pm on Sundays). Malaga was the birthplace of famous painter Pablo Picasso, and for just €1 you can visit the house where he grew up and where some of his paintings are still on display. For a taste of traditional tapas and wine, head to the outdoor restaurants along the seaside known as chiringuitos. These are very popular among locals and are a great way of ending a day of sightseeing around Malaga.

If you are planning your next getaway, book your flights to Malaga now and experience by yourself everything that this wonderful city has to offer.
