Travelling to and around New York

Flights to New York arrive in the city's three main airports. The John F. Kennedy airport is the largest in the city and one of the busiest in the world. Passengers arriving into JFK can reach the city via taxi, bus, and train. Many taxi companies offer flat rates of $52 for trips between the airport and Manhattan. Buses depart from Terminal 5 and cost $2.75 per journey, whereas the AirTrain costs $5 and connects with the subway.

LaGuardia airport is the closest to Manhattan, although it mostly serves domestic destinations. Taxis to Manhattan cost an average of $30 plus tolls, and shuttle bus tickets start at $12. There are also several city buses that stop at all terminals.

Newark airport is about 1 hour away from the city using public transport (bus and subway). Express buses to Manhattan cost $16, while a taxi ride can cost up to $80 (including tolls).

Once in New York City, visitors may want to purchase a MetroCard, which can be used at both the subway and the city buses. This will give you access to discounted transport fares, especially if you buy an unlimited MetroCard (which costs $30 and is valid for 7 days).
