Nearly fifty million people visit New York every year. This makes the Big Apple one of the most visited destinations in the world, and one of the best equipped cities in terms of tourist infrastructure.

As it would be expected from a world-class destination, New York has something to offer to every visitor, whether you are interested in architecture, the arts, shopping, photography, or experiencing the local nightlife. Below you will find some useful information on this city.

Travelling to and around New York

Flights to New York arrive in the city's three main airports. The John F. Kennedy airport is the largest in the city and one of the busiest in the world. In 2012 this airport handled more than 500,000 flights, including low cost flights to New York from countries in Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.

Passengers arriving into JFK can reach the city via taxi, bus, and train. Many taxi companies offer flat rates of $52 for trips between the airport and Manhattan. Buses depart from Terminal 5 and cost $2.75 per journey, whereas the AirTrain costs $5 and connects with the subway.

LaGuardia airport is the closest to Manhattan, although it mostly serves domestic destinations. Taxis to Manhattan cost an average of $30 plus tolls, and shuttle bus tickets start at $12. There are also several city buses that stop at all terminals.

Newark airport is about 1 hour away from the city using public transport (bus and subway). Express buses to Manhattan cost $16, while a taxi ride can cost up to $80 (including tolls).

Once in New York City, visitors may want to purchase a MetroCard, which can be used at both the subway and the city buses. This will give you access to discounted transport fares, especially if you buy an unlimited MetroCard (which costs $30 and is valid for 7 days). New York Insider Tips For a memorable (and free) trip to Staten Island and some of the best views of the city, hop on the Staten Island Ferry at Whitehall station. Discount codes for Broadway shows are easily available online, so do a quick search before going into the ticket office.

Many New York museums are free certain days of the week or work on an admission-by-donation basis. During the summer, many NY parks turn into free open-air movie theatres. Check the listings for Bryant Park, Hudson River Park, or the Socrates Sculpture Garden.

For the most comprehensive list of events in the city, get a copy of the Time Out NY magazine from a newsagent. If the above sounds appealing, all you need to do is find cheap flights to New York and get ready to enjoy the trip of a lifetime in this exciting city.
